C.P Snow’s writing confirms the personal experience I have encountered with the two cultures and their interaction with each other. For one, his perspective on universities contributing to the methodology, which continues the separation, is something I have faced while being a student at UCLA. Distinguishing science and humanities/social science majors by north and south campus has contributed to a kind of segregation felt by students on both sides of the school. My perspective on the segregation is that it has increased the competition between arts and science students, which has led to students prioritizing their self-interests over anything else. In essence, the competition between arts and sciences have blind sighted students and has lead to colleagues pursuing to beat one another out to get the best job and ignoring the wealth gap. Prior to this reading and the lectures I too had a fixed and competitive mindset, but after being exposed to the reality of the situation I have experienced a “paradigm shift.” Due to this class, instead of looking at south campus colleagues as my competitors, I will always be reminded of the wealth gap and how we, as the future leaders of the world are in training to make our global community a better place together. As a person, I feel that knowing the history about the separation of art and science, the problem of the wealth gap will give me a chance to educate those who assume one field or culture is better than the other. Hopefully educating others about the history of arts and science, and the substantial contribution of both cultures will inspire them to think of the larger problem at hand and motivate them to work towards fixing it together –the wealth gap.
